Sportstalk with Steve Kaplowitz

Welcome to the offical KROD Sportstalk home page.  This page will have everything you need to keep up with your local and national sports.  If you've ever wondered how we come up with all of our show topics, here's a list of websites we use every day. I don't want to give away too many secrets, but I know you'll find some of these very handy.

Steve Kaplowitz

Steve Kaplowitz, originally from New York, moved to El Paso in 1978. After graduating from Coronado High School and receiving his bachelor’s of arts in broadcast journalism from the University of Texas in 1995, he returned to El Paso to pursue a career in radio.

In 1996, Steve began hosting a weekend sports talk show on KROD 600. One year later, he took over as the station’s Program Director and moved into weekday afternoon timeslot as the host of Sportstalk.

In 2007, Kaplowitz was the television play-by-play voice for NMSU football and basketball, and he has also served as play-by-play announcer and analyst for the UTEP Miners women’s basketball team, the El Paso Buzzards Hockey Club and the High School Football Game of the Week.

Steve has worked as both a reporter and weekend anchor at KDBC-TV (CBS) and KTSM-TV (NBC) and currently co-hosts the Time Warner’s Metro Sports Talk with Wayne Thornton.  Kaplowitz, his wife Karen, and golden retrievers Samson and Delilah reside in West El Paso.

Now that Tony Barbee has withdrawn his name from consideration for the UMass opening, will Miner fans start to warm up to him more?  I don't know the answer to this question, but I do know that it's a great start for UTEP to capitalize on.  The Athletic Department should build on this, by making Barbee attend more community functions and cooperate more with local media.   This will help him get more fan support and it could only help attendance.

Since nobody knows for sure what led to Barbee's decision, here's my guess on what went down.  John Calipari, who Barbee played and coached for, told the UTEP head coach that he wanted to push Memphis assistant Derek Kellogg for the UMass job.  Barbee and Kellogg were teammates together at UMass amd both were assistants together at Memphis.  Then, Barbee landed the UTEP job while Kellogg stayed with Cal at Memphis.  Kellogg is a Massachussetts native, and considers the coaching opening in Amherst a "dream job." Cal tells Barbee that he already has a good job in El Paso, and he takes the Miners back to the NCAA Tournament, he can get a much bigger job than UMass.  Barbee listens to his mentor and announces he's not a candidate for the UMass job.

Girardi: 'I don't see him playing this week'
Alex Rodriguez's strained right quadriceps will keep him from playing this week, causing him to miss this weekend's series against the crosstown rival New York Mets. "It's still not where it needs to be. I don't see him playing this week," New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Monday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bryant says sore back remains a problem
Kobe Bryant met the media Monday with a new companion - an electronic stimulating device hooked up to his sore lower back. Plans call for the two to spend a lot of time together for the next couple of days, or longer. The Los Angeles Lakers' star tweaked his back in the opening minutes of Sunday's 123-115 overtime loss at Utah that tied the Western Conference semifinals 2-2. "It's pretty sore right now," Bryant said Monday. "It's tight. It's to be expected the next day, I guess.
