Let's deal with the latter first...the debate was somewhat entertaining just from the standpoint of John McCain lobbing bombs in the direction of Barack Obama. Here's the issue...Schmeggie was working the body...and you waited for him to pounce and go in for the finish...and it didn't really happen.

Those who watched the debate and still think Obama won...you're nuts. Instead of looking for a fight, you may have been looking for Dancing With The Stars...in which case, you probably are right Obama won. He was dancin', dancin', DANCIN'.

Now that said, I would be surprised if McCain wins this election. I just refuse to believe the public at large sees Barack Obama for who he is...and that's a socialist. What they do see is CHANGE and what they want is CHANGE...whether you believe Obama is qualified to be President or not, most of this public probably thinks McCain is not to be trusted.

The "deathblow" for Schmeggie may come Sunday when reports indicate Colin Powell will appear on NBC's Meet the Press to publicly endorse Barack Obama. I think it's a big deal...I know he didn't see eye-to-eye with President Bush while working in his cabinet. However, to totally take his years' of wonderful military service, who was years ago thought to be a possible running mate for John McCain and toss his support behind Obama may send serious shockwaves with those undecided voters who think highly of Powell's judgement. No matter the size of the quake...it won't bode well for Schmeggie if this is what happens.

Tomorrow will be an interesting day for the NFL...who am I kidding...every Sunday is an interesting day where the NFL is concerned. For me in the Upper Midwest...it's Bears v. Vikings early...followed by Colts at Pack. The NFC North will have some shakeup at least from the Chicago v. Minnesota game because the winner gets a huge advantage moving forward. It's shaping up to be a Midwest collision fest where players get hit in the mouth (possibly groin) and the leads are tight (no more than one score each way). I expect the Bears to hold serve at home from the standpoint that QB Kyle Orton CAN air it out when needed...while QB Gus Frerotte ISN'T ALLOWED to air it out. Is there a more conservative NFL HC than Brad Childress?? Don't think so...but the Bears are also "ticked off" about last year's matchup mixed with last week's result...and those guys wil show it.

Then the resurgent Indianapolis Colts travel to the Number One SI reader-rated Stadium in football being Lambeau Field. The Packers, who beat Seattle a week ago, claim they're ready and want the Colts. The defense especially spoke all week about beating up the Colts and not being afraid of Peyton Manning and his gaggle of receivers. That's all well and good...but the Colts (having trouble running the ball) look tough and Manning specifically seems to have found his comfort zone behind a game offensive line. Colts will win, but not by as much as fans are bracing themselves for.

Finally...a piece I saw earlier this week brings up the dawn of everyone's favorite pastime....the Brett Favre Watch. It was brought up this week to the New York Jets QB...his response, "We'll take it week to week," per Profootballtalk.com. "At the end of the season, I'll take a look at...I'll assess how I played this year and talk with the Jets and we'll see from there."

Oh goodie...there's nothing more heartwarming than knowing Favre is keeping his eye on the future. My future that is...covering more "Will He?" or "Won't He" crap...

My only hope is that by the end of this season, should number 4 decide (YET AGAIN) to hang 'em up and retire...shed the tears, cue the wimpering and hit his music...that he find something else to occupy his time. Because by then, Brett might to be able to join President Obama and the newly-divorced (and pissed off) Madonna on next year's Dancing With The Stars.

Just sayin'....
