El Paso is blessed with several talented, great football players and that becomes evident every Friday night when they perform during a game on the gridiron. For example: El Dorado QB Anthony Lopez passed for 301 yards and 5 TD’S in a 50-42 thriller over the Hanks Knights. Lopez also rushed for 76 yards and 1 TD covering 57 yards….His counterpart last Friday night, Hanks Junior QB Matt Reyes, riddled the El Dorado defense for a staggering 423 yards and 3 TD’S. In five games, Reyes has thrown for 1,444 yards and 17 TD’S…. Matt’s favorite target, first team All-State WR Ryan Pettis lived up to his reputation against El Dorado catching 11 passes for 285 yards and 2 TD’S, despite a constant double team…. However, El Dorado DB Ryan Lopez saved the game for the Aztecs. Lopez intercepted a Matt Reyes pass in the end zone with 30 seconds left in the game…. Hanks was desperately trying to complete a TD pass in order to cut the El Dorado margin to two points, 50-48, and then to play for a tie with a successful two point conversion…. Defending District 1-5A champion Montwood blasted Bel Air 48-20 thanks to a 6 TD, 283 yard passing performance from Senior QB Louie Tinoco…. Defending District 1-4A champion Austin won its’ 15th game in 16 trys whipping Andress 40-13 behind the stellar play of QB Ernest Raya and WR Marcus Calhoun. Raya shredded the Andress defense for 280 yards of offense and 4 TD’S, on only 12 plays from scrimmage. WR Marcus Calhoun only caught two Raya passes, but the receptions were worth 116 yards and 2 TD’S. One TD pass covered 72 yards, and the other traveled 44 yards…. Austin RB Ben Sustaita ran roughshod over the Andress defense for 131 yards, on 21 carries and two TD’S…. Franklin QB Josh Valenzuela led the Cougars to a 34-21 victory over Socorro accounting for 282 yards worth of offense and 4 TD’S…. Franklin’s other QB Parker Rando, unfortunately was lost for the year because of a knee injury that required season ending surgery…. Coronado’s 5-5 inch All-District RB Willlie Williams ran over Eastwood for 158 yards and 3 TD’S ruining the Troopers’ 2008 Homecoming celebration….. Canutillo, and Del Valle, District 2-4A’s co-champions, suffered opening night league losses to Ysleta, and Parkland, respectively…. Ysleta stunned Del Valle 20-10 at home at Hutchins Stadium, while Parkland outscored Canutillo 36-21 at home in Northeast El Paso…. Canutillo’s best player, star RB John De La Rosa tried to play with a bad case of the flu, but just could not help his fellow teammates gaining 9 yards on 8 attempts, plus one fumble…. After that, Eagles coach Scott Brooks sent De La Rosa to the bench for the night…. Last week, I posted a 13-3 won-lost prediction record. For the season, I have guessed right 25 times, while losing 5 games, which is good for an 83.3% winning percentage…. This week, on Thursday night, I’ll take Coronado over Hanks, and El Dorado to defeat Bel Air. Andress should get back on the winning track beating EPHS in a Thursday night District 1-4A game, while the Burges Mustangs should stop the Jefferson Silver Foxes…. On Friday night, October 3rd, Socorro will defeat Americas, while Franklin should hand Eastwood, yet another District 1-5A loss rounding out the fourth week of league play…. In District 1-4A action, Austin will take care of Irvin, and Chapin will defeat Bowie…. District 2-4A finds Riverside journeying to Del Valle in what should be a heated rivalry game. Horizon makes the long trip to Canutillo, while Parkland invades San Elizario, and Ysleta visits Mt. View….. It’s onward through the fog for me, as I believe Del Valle, Parkland, Ysleta, and Canutillo will find the Winner’s Circle this week…. Last, but not least, Cathedral will defeat Chapparal, while Silver City stops Gadsden, and Socorro, New Mexico whips Santa Teresa…. Perhaps the best game in West Texas will take place in Odessa, Texas on Friday night when undefeated, 6th ranked Odessa Permian, battles the unbeaten Odessa Bronchos in a key District 3-5A contest. Both clubs are 4-0, and both own 3-0 District 3-5A records. Ratliff Stadium seats 21,000 fans and wil be bursting at the seams when these two arch-rivals get together. Odessa has defeated Odessa Permian only three times in 48 meetings…. Observations after five weeks of the 2008 season: I do not believe Eastwood, or Bel Air, has enough talent to successfully play in District 1-5A any longer. I do believe they would more than hold their own in a 4A league! I do hope they both .
