District 1-5A play opens up this week, the third week of the 2008 Football season, with four league games on the slate. Montwood will travel to Eastwood, Bel Air journeys to Hanks, Coronado invades Americas, and El Dorado makes a Thursday night appearance at the Socorro Athletic Complex to battle unbeaten Socorro. Franklin is idle this week. Having to play league games during the third week of the season does not give the Head Football Coaches at any of the schools very much time to correct mistakes made in the first two weeks of the 2008 campaign, especially the teams that have been losing games. At any rate, I pick Montwood, Hanks, Coronado, and El Dorado to win in District 1-5A play this week….. It’s a shame that the Canutillo-Andress game, scheduled for Andress this Friday night, September 12th, had to be moved out of Andress Stadium. The reason? Andress’ new Astro-Turf field could not be installed by the Contractors in time for the game thanks to the heavy rains falling on Northeast El Paso the last two months turning the upturned dirt that was Andress’ field into a sea of mud. The quagmire of mud, in what used to be Andress’ grass field, made it impossible for the Contractors to level the mud, so the Artificial-Turf could be rolled onto the surface of the field. The Canutillo- Andress game will now be played this Thursday night, September 11th at 7 pm at Irvin Memorial Stadium…… Canutillo and Andress needed all the time they could get to pepare for this match-up, but lost one full day of practice time when the game had to be re-scheduled. To make matters worse, Canutillo lost a heartbreaking game to Austin, 28-23, in the final two minutes of the contest, while Andress was on the Carlsbad five yardline with 11 seconds to play trailing the Cavemen 13-7. Andress was in great shape to either tie or win this game with Carlsbad, but fumbled the football throwing away the game.
Congratulations to Coronado head football coach, Don Brooks, who won his 200th career victory last Thursday night when his team upset Amarillo Palo Duro 21-3. The win over Palo Duro moved Coach Brooks into 15th place all time in Texas High School football wins. The milestone victory came at a good time for Coronado because it occurred one week before district play begins. The Thunderbirds start district play against Americas on September 12th. Coronado, under the only two coaches the school has ever known-Jack Quarles and Don Brooks-owns a 304-158-6 lifetime record. Coronado has the best win list record in El Paso high school football.
