Every four years Americans come down with a terrible affliction.  Productivity goes down, and people stay up until the wee hours of the night glued to the television.  What causes all this you might ask?  It is Olympic fever, of course.  It comes on during the opening ceremonies as a little itch in the throat.  By day four it is a full blown temperature with vomiting, dizzy spells, and all the symptoms of any bad fever.

Sure, people across the world tune into the Olympics, but it has a special place for Americans because we dominate the summer games.  With the exception of a few obscure sports, it seems like there is an American individual or team with a chance to medal in every sport.  Naturally, I like the crowd pleasing events like basketball, swimming, gymnastics, and track and field.  However, ever four years I find myself watching things I would otherwise have no iterest in.  I have been scouring the tv listings to find the finals whitewater rafting of weightlifting.  Even if I have to watch the obscure networks in the NBC family like Oxygen or CNBC, I will tune in.  I won't break my fever until the closing ceremonies on August 24th.
