I jokingly referred to the Super Bowl as the 'Big Game' in my title because I love when advertisers refer to the Super Bowl as the 'Big Game' so as not to infringe on the NFL's trademark of the name Super Bowl. Between Texas vs. the Nation and UTEP basketball Steve and I have not devoted a ton of time to breaking down or prognosticating the 'big game.' In sports radio we are contractually obligated to break down the game ad nauseum and predict the score so here it goes.I can't remember a Super Bowl where the two teams are so evenly matched and do things so similarly. Brees and Manning both lead prolific passing attacks and have underrated ground games. Both defenses are smaller but opportunistic. The latest AP and coaches top 25 college basketball rankings were released this morning. It's no shock Kansas sits at number one in both polls after an impressive road win at Kansas State. UTEP went on the road and defeated a ranked conference foe in double overtime, improved its record to 15-5 and could only garner seven feeble top 25 votes in the AP poll. The Miners didn't even show up in the coaches poll. I give the coaches a pass because they don't have a lot of time to watch teams other than their own play. The coaches probably aren't aware of the high level of basketball UTEP is playing right now. Shame on the AP writers for giving UAB 32 votes and UTEP only seven after the Miners beat UAB in their own house! It's okay though. I like that the Miners are flying under the radar right now, and there will be plenty of room on the bandwagon when the Miners win at least two games in March ;)
UTEP, New Mexico, and NMSU all sit near the top of their conferences and have chances to make the NCAA tournament!
