Getting ready for the Milwaukee Brewers press conference where they'll name former Oakland A's skipper Ken Macha their new manager.
Macha actually turned down this job back in 2002, when GM Doug Melvin offered it to him. Then he got hired by A's GM Billy Beane.
Macha had a falling out with both Beane and his players at the end of his tenure in Oakland. Which, as the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Anthony Witrado points out, was the major issue with Ned Yost at the end. Maybe old habits die hard...then again...
****
Now that the Brewers locked up GM Doug Melvin with a contract and announce the hiring of Macha as the manager...the attention now goes to bringing back ace CC Sabathia (look no dots). Sabathia, who may want to return home to a California team (see Dodgers), will get a better offer most likely from the Dodgers or Yankees.
The Crew will do their best to make a solid offer. Benefit ...

Let's start off with a verbal slap....
Despite the New York Jets surviving the awesomely crappy Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 to go to 4-3 on the season....they still suck.
Not all 4-3 teams are created equal. Case in point...the Jets have the same record as the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are tied with the Chicago Bears for first in the NFC North. The Jets are in third place in the AFC East behind the headstrong New England Patriots and the somewhat shell-shocked Buffalo Bills. If the Packers and Jets met on a neutral field (say the Sun Bowl) who would win. The Packers would win in a landslide despite Brett Favre's best efforts to will the Jets and try and teach them all of the Packers codewords.
The Jets problem (as I've said here in this space before) starts with coaching. Gameplans don't make much sense...and was brought up DURING the game by CBS analyst Dan Dierdorf during an interview with Hall of Fame QB Joe Namath. Namath said s ...

Football is supposed to teach the young men that play the sport something about the game of life. However, sometimes all football teaches a young man is how futile life can occasionally be. This lesson does not seem to be valuable or worth it.
Take what happened to the Horizon Scorpions last Friday night against the Riverside Rangers. With 3:09 left to play in the fourth quarter, Horizon scored a late touchdown against Riverside to narrow the scoring margin to 21-20.
Horizon Head Coach Robby Morales elected to play it safe by kicking the extra point to tie the game at 21-21. With 3:09 left in the contest, Morales and his Scorpions could still try to win this District 2-4A battle in regulation time or play for overtime.
Coach Morales did the right thing and chose to play for the tie at 21 all. He sent kicker, Issac Cedillo , out onto the field to knot the contest with a successful extra point boot.
Cedillo has been a reliable kicker all year, but on ...

I've decided this week that my life will open up more free time for me to do nothing when I get home from work by adopting an ESPN edict. That edict is if a story breaks in a forest, and I'm not the one doing the breaking...it doesn't exist.
You may recall that for three days, Bristol avoided the Brett Favre story like the plague. The story, originally broke by FOX's Jay Glazer, first hit the airwaves during last Sunday's pregame show. Because it wasn't a scoop from Chris Mortensen or John Clayton et al., ESPN refused to acknowledge it was even news. It waited for Favre himself to make comments on Wednesday for them to begin discussing the story.
As a journalist, you're not going to get every scoop. I'm not sure ESPN knows this, but quality NFL reporting goes on outside of Bristol. There's one more scoop they've been ignoring. But as a person, ESPN's tactic of ignorance is easily copied. Wait, you mean there's an African-American candidate running for Pr ...

After another tumultuous week of the NFL...one question remains for teams who are currently down on their luck: Is it too late to turn this season around?
There are a number of teams who had expectations of making the playoffs and possibly a championship run, who are now playing awful football and must begin now making the climb up into the top half of their divisions and conferences. Those teams inlcude the Dallas Cowboys (4-3), Minnesota Vikings (3-4), San Diego Chargers (3-4), Indianapolis Colts (3-3), New York Jets (3-3) and the Cleveland Browns (2-4).
The idea behind this exercise is determining if these teams (not including New England, for they play tonight and if they win, aren't in this category yet) have what it takes to make that push. There's time...but it's ticking away and from here on out, every game could be viewed as a make-or-break game. The single aspect of these situations are can the coaching staff motivate the players to stop being inco ...

Austin Head Football Coach Ruben Batista has enjoyed an incredible ride over the last two seasons in leading the Golden Panthers to 17 wins in the last 18 games……Batista, who is an Austin graduate, has worked at his alma mater for the last 10 years as the leader of the school’s football fortunes on the gridiron. It was a job he coveted, wanting it very badly, wanting to see, if he could turn the Golden Cats into winners, not losers……He has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams guiding Austin to a District 1-4A championship in 2007, compiling an 11-1 record, and so far this year he has coached the Panthers to a 7-0 record, proving that last year was no fluke……
Ruben, now owns a 45-44 career coaching record, which is rather amazing considering he had posted a 28-43 mark just two seasons ago. Why, all of a sudden, has Austin won 17 out of its’ last 18 games? There are a lot of reasons why Austin sports a 17-1 record over the last 18 games on the football field. Prim ...

Let's deal with the latter first...the debate was somewhat entertaining just from the standpoint of John McCain lobbing bombs in the direction of Barack Obama. Here's the issue...Schmeggie was working the body...and you waited for him to pounce and go in for the finish...and it didn't really happen.
Those who watched the debate and still think Obama won...you're nuts. Instead of looking for a fight, you may have been looking for Dancing With The Stars...in which case, you probably are right Obama won. He was dancin', dancin', DANCIN'.
Now that said, I would be surprised if McCain wins this election. I just refuse to believe the public at large sees Barack Obama for who he is...and that's a socialist. What they do see is CHANGE and what they want is CHANGE...whether you believe Obama is qualified to be President or not, most of this public probably thinks McCain is not to be trusted.
The "deathblow" for Schmeggie may come S ...

Getting ready for the final Presidential Debate tonight at the top of the hour...and if you've heard Michael Savage (who airs on this station and mine) you may have heard him refer to John McCain as Schmeggie (my spelling). Well, in the very least, McCain is Dead Schmeggie Walking and tonight may in fact be Schmeggie's Last Stand.
Think of tonight's debate as a heavyweight title fight...with Barack Obama as your champion and McCain as the challenger. A draw will simply not do for McCain. Schmeggie has to knock him out...to do so, he needs to do the EXACT opposite of how he's handled every appearance thus far and call out Obama for the questionable candidate others make him out to be.
At some point, the media and the people have to be right. Even if you believe the media is biased (which in many cases it is) and people are generally morons. All Schmeggie has to do is listen to any conservative voice who's not in his campaign and figure out a gameplan for ton ...
