District 1-4A and District 2-4A high school football resumes this Thursday night, Sept 24th, when Irvin meets Chapin at 7 p.m. at Burges High School’s new artificial turf field. District 1-5A action returns on Friday, Sept 25th with four games on the slate.
After two weeks of District 1-5A play, the usual suspects sport 2-0 records against the league. Defending champion, Montwood, and perennial playoff combatants, Franklin and Coronado, own perfect district records.
There are two surprise teams in District 1-5A so far this year. El Dorado is 2-0 and Hanks is 1-1. Jim Althoff’s El Dorado Aztecs, 2-0/ 3-1, are a real load for any opponent. Althoff has been the coach at El Dorado since its inception and has already compiled a 12-12 record which is excellent for a new school.
Hanks has put together a 3-1/ 1-1 record suffering its first district loss to Montwood 35-14. Hank’s new QB, Matt Reyes, has already passed for 1021 yards in four games. He ...

Week four of the high school football season is very unique because all District 1-4A and District 2-4A teams will be enjoying the week off as they get ready for district play in two weeks.
Ruben Bautista and his Austin Panthers sport a 3-0 record after the non-district slate of games have been completed. Austin has won 14 of their last 15 games dating back to last year. Panther’s quarterback, Ernest Raya, whipped Read More »

Like a lot of people, I can't believe Don Haskins passed away Sunday afternoon from congestive heart failure. If there was ever a person who I thought would live forever, it was Coach Haskins. Although he gave up smoking years ago, The Bear never quit his second love, a shot of tequila. Forget the high-end stuff...Cuervo was Coach's choice. And I was lucky enough to partake in Coach's favorite pasttime over the years.
I'm going to miss the trips in his truck, talking basketball and other sports. I loved getting a ride in the passenger seat of his truck and always paid close attention to the stories. I used to love to ask him about different legends I heard involving The Bear over the years. Like the one about him beating Minnesota Fats in billiards. "Not true," ...

District 1-5A play opens up this week, the third week of the 2008 Football season, with four league games on the slate. Montwood will travel to Eastwood, Bel Air journeys to Hanks, Coronado invades Americas, and El Dorado makes a Thursday night appearance at the Socorro Athletic Complex to battle unbeaten Socorro. Franklin is idle this week. Having to play league games during the third week of the season does not give the Head Football Coaches at any of the schools very much time to correct mistakes made in the first two weeks of the 2008 campaign, especially the teams that have been losing games. At any rate, I pick Montwood, Hanks, Coronado, and El Dorado to win in District 1-5A play this week….. It’s a shame that the Canutillo-Andress game, scheduled for Andress this Friday night, September 12th, had to be moved out of Andress Stadium. The reason? Andress’ new Astro-Turf field could not be installed by the Contractors in time for the game thanks to the heavy rains falling on Northeast El Paso the ...
